Eating healthy is an incredibly important part of living a healthy lifestyle. While exercise, sleep, and stress management have their place, a proper diet is the secret to losing weight, feeling good, and keeping your health in check.


However! Eating healthy is much easier said than done. It can be challenging to know what to buy, how to prepare it, and then making yourself eat it. This is where meal prep can save the day!



What is Meal Prep?

Meal prepping is when you cook some, or all, of your food in batches to be eaten throughout the week. This can include chopping veggies, browning meats, preparing sauces, and putting your food in separate containers for each meal.


Meal prepping doesn't have to be for every single meal of the week, and it doesn't mean you have to spend all day in the kitchen. (Unless you want to!) It does mean that you set aside a few hours one day a week to prepare healthy food in advance.

Meal prepping also eliminates a lot of the harmful ingredients found in packaged, processed, fast foods. You'll have peace of mind knowing that there are no harmful additives in your diet.


Meal prep will also keep you on track with your weight loss and diet goals. You can make sure you are portioning your food out for your ideal macros and calories. You can also ensure that you are eating the type of food you want to eat, ensuring that you will enjoy it.


Finally, meal prep can keep you healthy because it makes your life easier! Most of us don't enjoy, have time, or feel like cooking healthy meals 3 times a day, 7 days a week. When you meal prep, you can eliminate stress and time by having prepared meals ready to go!


Tips for Successful Meal Prep


Here’s how to do it:


  1. Make a Plan. The first step is to sit down and think about what foods you enjoy, what you prefer to eat, and what fits in both your budget and diet. Then, make a grocery list and set aside a few hours on the weekend to cook. Most meal preppers do their batch cooking on the weekends, so they are prepared for the work week ahead. But you can use any day that works best for you!

  2. Invest in Containers. In addition to buying ingredients, you also want to invest in some good containers that you can store in your fridge and freezer. It's also helpful if they are microwave or oven safe! That way, you can easily heat up your ingredients without getting another container dirty.

  3. Multitask. Think about what you can do to get the most prepping done in the least amount of time. You can put something in your instant pot, have a one-sheet meal in the oven, and brown meat in a skillet, while chopping veggies on the island. This will help you get full meals done in much less time.


Getting started with meal prep may seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! Focus on foods you enjoy and keep the preparation process simple. With a little practice, you'll be a meal prep master in no time!
